Competition entry for the German Embassy in Addis Ababa
The aim of the competition was to expand the German Embassy in Addis Ababa to include a chancellery building, which will house not only part of the administration but also the visa office. A massive monolith constructed from locally available materials was planned. The two-storey building is the first impression upon entering the embassy site and confidently sets itself away from the lower-level surrounding development. The structure takes place through the overlapping upper floor and the breakthroughs in the façade. Inwards, the building opens with a central foyer and a spacious patio.
The construction takes into account, among other things, site-specific factors such as climate, earthquakes and altitude with a ventilated tropical roof and protection against the steeply incoming sun.
